With so many great tequilas to choose from, picking the right brand can be an overwhelming task. Explore the various flavors and nuances of each of these fine tequilas, and choose the one that best suits your tastes!

How is tequila made?

Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, which grows mainly in the Mexican states of Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Tamaulipas. The juice extracted from the heart of these plants is used to make tequila. The hearts are cooked in ovens or steamers so that they can be mashed and extracted. The juice is put into large fermentation tanks where yeast is added to it, turning the sugars into alcohol. After this, the fermented liquid is distilled twice in copper stills in order to produce a clear spirit that can range from 55% to 60% ABV. This spirit is then aged in oak barrels for several months or years, depending on the type of tequila. Blanco (unaged) tequilas have a lighter flavor and are typically bottled directly after distillation, while reposado (aged) and anejo (extra aged) tequilas tend to have a more complex and mellow flavor as they spend time in oak barrels. Finally, the spirit is blended with other ingredients to produce a bottle of tequila that meets the standards set by Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT).

In addition to meeting CRT’s specific requirements, many tequila producers pride themselves on their unique production methods. Some may use only traditional cooking techniques while others employ modern or hybrid ones and may even add special ingredients in order to create a unique flavor profile. No matter what methods are used, the final product must meet the standards set by CRT in order for it to be labeled and sold as tequila.
